Gravel riding Big Bear Lake

 Ride Overview

Big Bear is Southern California's access to ski lifts in the winter and some non-snow related activities through the summer. It's more popular for the Snow Summit Bike Park, if you're looking to mix things up on your gravel bike there is a myriad of forestry roads around the lake connecting surrounding areas.

The route we rode was more of a tour around the lake with mainly moderate terrain. We started on "Skyline" which is 12 miles of some of the best single track Big Bear has to offer. From this trail system there is the opportunity to drop down to the valley below if long climbs are what you're seeking.

Crossing over to the north side of the lake there is a small town called Fawnskin. At the entrance point to the trail system there is a convenience store if you need to fill up water or grab some snacks. From that point we headed east towards the Holcomb Valley area which has some great sport and trad climbing. If you were to head east, there are trails that connect to lake Arrowhead and essentially the Wrightwood area as well.

Basically you're offered plenty of opportunity to Get Lost...

 Coffee in Big Bear

Our top pick for coffee in Big Bear is CAFÉ CRÊPE with authentic French Crépes and delicious drinks. We would highly recommend making a stop if your in the area.

Food in Big Bear

Our top pick for dinner is a new addition to the restaurants available in Big Bear. Stella Luna had well prepared food that tasted great, was sourced locally, and with reasonable prices.

Personally I believe there may be some untapped potential for some epic gravel rides. In the summer, as long as you are not up there during a holiday weekend, you'll be met with an affordable and more or less sleepy mountain kind of town. If nothing else if you find yourself in the area at least ride Skyline.

Team Best MAAP Equinox ride: "A Million Feet, One Smile at a Time"

The goal was deceptively simple: as a group, climb 1,000,000 feet in a single day on San Diego's Mt. Soledad. At first glance, it might sound monotonous or downright tedious, but scratch the surface, and you'll find an endless maze of roads winding their way up to the summit. The real kicker? No matter which route you took, each lap only netted you a mere 700-1,000 feet of elevation gain. A million feet? Yeah, it was a grind—but somehow, everyone did it with a smile.
