Meet Amelia Durst, a cyclist with an inspiring journey that began not on two wheels but with running shoes pounding the pavement. Amelia’s story is a testament to discovery, persistence, and embracing the unexpected—qualities that have defined her path to becoming a privateer racer with an ambitious 2025 schedule.
Amelia discovered cycling in 2016, almost by chance. Coming from a non-athletic background, she began running after high school, eventually pushing herself into marathon distances. But once she found the bike, everything changed.
“Everyone kind of told me I was a natural and that I should start racing,” she recalls. But at the time, she didn’t know how to navigate the cycling world. “I thought you had to be on a team.”
Her introduction to racing came in an unexpected way during her final semester of grad school at Baylor University. For a nutrition project, she reached out to the university’s cycling club and found herself racing just days later. “They told me there was a race that weekend—did I want to hop in? So I did!”
After three collegiate races, the pandemic temporarily halted her momentum, but it didn’t stifle her passion. Amelia was eager to return and explore new cycling challenges.
Three years ago, Amelia found herself drawn to gravel cycling, thanks to the Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR), one of the sport's premier events. Through connections like PT from Floyd’s Leadville and her involvement with the Highlands Club Team, she secured entry to her first BWR event and was hooked.
“Gravel racing just clicked for me,” Amelia says. Her dedication and skill soon earned her an entry to Unbound Gravel, one of the most prestigious gravel events, through a partnership with apparel company Seven Mesh. She’s now preparing for her fourth Unbound appearance in 2025, excited to tackle the challenges ahead.
For Amelia, 2025 is shaping up to be a monumental year. “I’m starting the year in Arizona with some road stage races—Tucson Bicycle Classic and Valley of the Sun—before diving into gravel with BWR Arizona,” she shares.
Her schedule includes most of the Belgian Waffle Ride series, another round of Unbound, and her ambitious goal of taking on Gravel Worlds. As a privateer racer supported by a handful of sponsors, Amelia balances the demands of competition with the freedom to carve her own path in the cycling world.
Cadence Cyclery Encinitas recently had the privilege of hosting PAS Normal Studios for their Mid Summer 200K ride. Regardless of your opinion of the PAS brand, there is no denying one thing. Between their US-based youth cycling program and now this group ride, they are here to impact the cycling community for the better. And they have some deeply passionate people working hard to make it happen. We are looking forward to more of this and hope to aid in their efforts however we can.
I’ve always believed that having a plan is good, but being flexible is even better. Our recent trip to Montana proved that point in the best way possible.
The inaugural Belgian Waffle Ride Montana didn’t just arrive in Bozeman—it kicked the door down, left tire tracks through the living room, and poured a cold recovery beer on the way out. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Montana’s vast gravel playgrounds, the first-ever BWR MT delivered a day that tested the sadists of the saddle and gave us the “Hell of the Bozone” in all its glory.
